One Stone DTIYS
One Stone is the brainchild of the wonderfully witty Gus Markowitz III, following two brothers Vic & Vern living their best, most chaotic lives in the Louisiana wetlands.
Now, you might think the bayou is all slow water and the occasional splash in the dark. And you'd be right. But somewhere knee-deep in murky swamp water and even murkier conversation, two brothers bicker and stumble through the backdoors and on stage of the AAP as they take over this next challenge.
Vern (the oldest of the two) believes with every fibre of his being that he is the wisest, most sophisticated creature to ever wade the earth. Vic is absolutely, categorically done with his brother yet inexplicably still standing next to or perched right on top of him in virtually every episode.
That's Vic and Vern.
_
VERN is a large teal blue heron of considerable height and even more considerable flippancy. Full legal name: Veronica Blue Heron. He is the oldest brother and a creature who has never once doubted a decision he's made. Vern never learns. Vern never will. This is the nature of Vern.
VIC is of the smaller, purple variety and is also in possession of arguably the bird world’s most expressive eyebrows. As the younger brother and the voice of reason, he endures, he perseveres and he has, without question the better looking hair of the two and is not afraid to tell you so himself.

THE CHALLENGE: This is a DTIYS — Draw This In Your Style
Your mission is to take Vic and Vern and reimagine them through the lens of your artistic voice. Your lines, your palette, your world. The only rule? Those two birds and that unmistakable dynamic must shine through. We need to feel the eye-rolls, the misplaced confidence and most importantly…the swamp.
A few things to keep in mind as you wade in:
- Capture the duo, not just the design. Vic and Vern are nothing without each other. Their relationship is the punchline. Whether you go full illustration, comic panel, chibi, painterly, abstract or somewhere wonderfully weird in between, make sure both birds and their energy are present and accounted for.
- Style is everything. This is a draw in YOUR style challenge. Resist the temptation to simply copy the source material and instead translate it. What do Vic and Vern look like through your eyes? Gritty and painted? Soft and water-coloured? Geometric and graphic? Delightfully unhinged? Yes. All of that.
- Honor the humor. You don't have to write a joke, but the feeling of one should linger somewhere in the piece. A look. A posture. A raised brow. The particular energy of a bird who is three seconds away from either a terrible idea or a worse pun. One Stone's secret ingredient is that wry, deadpan warmth. Try to bottle just a drop of it and it will serve you well in this challenge.
- Size matters. One of the great unspoken visual jokes of One Stone is the sheer scale difference between the two brothers. Vern is tall. Vic is not. The height difference is a character in of itself, so don’t be afraid to lean into it.
So tuck in your tail feathers and prepare to ruffle your pea-nests, as you reimagine the world of One Stone in your own unique style.
- Include a background. Plain or white backgrounds will not suffice
- Fit the main portion of your image within the card frame (approx. 3×2 inch portrait)
- No signatures on the original artwork itself
